Midwives act as leaders and often explore ways to improve the care of women and families. Our workshops focus on enhancing the midwife’s ability to confidently apply clinical and leadership skills when caring for women during childbirth, and throughout midwifery practice.

Knot-tying and Suturing: The knot-tying and suturing workshopincludes technical aspects of knot-tying, needles and suture, handling of suturing instruments, and mentored hands-on simulation of suturing techniques for the birth room or the OR using suture and foam models. The goal of the session is expanded understanding of sutures, needles, and the associated techniques when performing wound repair.

The Midwife as Surgical First Assistant at Cesarean: The surgical first assistant workshop addresses prevention of the primary cesarean, the woman’s preoperative preparation and informed consent, family-centered cesarean, functioning as an active member of the perioperative team, surgical skills, tissue dissection, closures, complications, and care of the woman after surgery. Mentored hands-on simulation builds surgical skills and comprehension through performance of cesarean using fabric models. The goal of the session is development of the understanding and skill set necessary to expand midwifery practice and act as the first assistant at cesarean.
