New Hampshire Midwives Association

The New Hampshire Midwives’ Association (NHMA) promotes and protects the rights of birthing parents in the state of NH to experience skilled, evidence-based, family-centered midwifery care in their homes or in the state’s many free standing birthing centers. We provide public education about choices in birthing and facilitate ongoing support for the state’s midwives through regular peer review, continuing education and community gatherings.

Midwives believe pregnancy and childbirth are healthy, normal experiences. Childbirth can be one of the most creative, powerful processes life has to offer. In addition to physical care, midwives emphasize the emotional, spiritual, social and educational needs of the client. They foster self-determination, support emotional and spiritual strength, and promote well-being. They encourage women and birthing people to participate in their own care and consider them responsible partners in the health care system.

New Hampshire Certified Midwives (NHCMs) offer prenatal care, attendance at planned out-of-hospital births, postpartum care, as well as support for a healthy pregnant person and their family during the normal child-bearing cycle.
